As a California refugee (and one who restored a trashed Eichler home in the city of Orange), I am particularly partial to homes that were built in the middle of the 20th Century using a “modern” architectural style. Called contemporary as well, these homes incorporated angular lines and flat planes to project a boxy, incomplete sense for the viewer. This style, coined “Mid Century Modern”, was considered to be an extension of the organic architectural principles of the well-known Frank Lloyd Wright, whose influence was primarily upon the first third of the century.
Open floorplans, lots of windows, an overall attempt to “bring the outside in” characterized Mid Century Modern designs from about 1940 to 1975. Many homes in Lancaster County were built that attempted to emulate this style, despite the pressure to build more traditional plans (pressure that continues today, by the way).
With the advent of green-friendly architecture (that tends toward contemporary styles), I’m hoping to see a revivial of the Mid-Century home in Lancaster County. In the meantime, here are some current homes for sale in Lancaster that are built with the Mid Century Style:
